ACSA was founded in 1999 by a group of Afghan computer science students at the time who are now key players in the Afghan ICT sector. ACSA was joined by number of technology students and professionals in the following years. It launched its technology publication, The Computer Science, a bimonthly magazine in Pashto and Dari in the year 2000. In 2004, ACSA partnered with Ministry of Communications of Afghanistan, Microsoft Corporation, International Development Research Center (IDRC), Canada, to develop localization standards and computer technologies into local Afghan languages.

The ACSA leadership has decided in 2014 to restructure the organization, review the objectives, run a membership campaign, hold a general assembly of the members and elect new board of directors.
